Whether you are self-employed, a company director, landlord, or higher-rate taxpayer, your annual Self Assessment tax return must be filed with HMRC by 31 January and all tax paid on time to avoid penalties and interest charges.
At Kent Tax Specialists, we prepare your return with precision, drawing on detailed knowledge of HMRC Self Assessment guidance and current UK tax legislation. We identify every allowable expense, applicable relief, and legitimate deduction, from trading income to pension contributions, Gift Aid payments, and foreign income.
We handle complex returns involving multiple income sources, loss relief, carry-back claims, and payment on account adjustments. Your Common Self Assessment Questions Answered
If you or your partner earns between £60,000 and £80,000 and you receive Child Benefit, a tax charge claws it back at 1% for every £200 of income over £60,000. Above £80,000 the full benefit is clawed back. The charge is collected through Self Assessment. Thresholds changed in April 2024 (previously £50,000).
For online returns, the deadline is 31 January. Paper returns must be filed by 31 October. Tax owed is also due by 31 January. Payments on account (if applicable) are due 31 January and 31 July. Missing these deadlines triggers automatic penalties starting at £100.
An automatic £100 penalty applies immediately. After 3 months, £10 daily penalties begin (up to £900). After 6 months, an additional 5% of tax due (or £300 minimum). After 12 months, a further 5% penalty. Interest accrues on unpaid tax. We help file late returns and, where possible, submit a reasonable excuse appeal to mitigate penalties.
Yes. You can amend an online return within 12 months of the filing deadline (31 January two years after the tax year end). After that, you must write to HMRC requesting a correction. We advise clients to review returns carefully before submission but can handle amendments if an error is found later.
Payments on account are advance payments towards next year’s tax bill. If your Self Assessment bill exceeds £1,000 and more than 20% of your tax is not collected at source, HMRC requires two advance payments — 50% of the prior year’s tax, due 31 January and 31 July. First-year filers often face a surprise double bill in January. We always explain the full payment position in advance.
